Being that we are people of the land, our language kind of expresses that. They have a saying, "the water bring us and the water take us." So, with those kinds of things, we reflect on the fact that we are connected to the waterways and to the air, and we are the stewards of it.
I think a lot of the words and a lot of the things that we say in the Gullah Geechee culture reflects back to nature. Through language, we are holding on to who we are. And that gives us a different worldview.
I'm an elder in the Wisdom Circle of Elders for the Gullah Geechee Nation. So, that makes me even more in tune to language because the words that you speak has a lot to do with how you think. When we speak in our language, that's a connection there.
Most of the time when I'm around my friends, it's a whole different language, which is Gullah Geechee language, and so many different interpretations of it that make me like, “yeah, I'm home now.”
