I typically go toward Gullah Geechee a lot more just so people can be oriented with where I come from, especially when you’re in North Carolina, because it's such a big state. So, a lot of people don't even realize that we are down here.
I am a seventh-generation Gullah Geechee woman from Brunswick County. I was not born here. My mother is born and raised here, and our family has been here since Brunswick County was established, which was in the 1720s.
That's how long our people have been here.
In fact, where we're sitting now, if you walk out, the point of de-embarkation for the slave vessels is right over there.
